Mount Snow Hiking Center
Located at the Mount Snow Resort. The Hiking Center offers trail maps, hiking boots, backpacks, hydration systems and all the gear needed for the ultimate hiking experience. Hikers at Mount Snow have access to more than 20 miles of trails through the Green Mountain National Forest on and around the mountain, with terrain for various abilities. Or take a chairlift up to the summit and descend the mountain at your own pace. Your efforts will be rewarded with magnificent views of Southern New England and New York State. 802-464-4040.
Grout Pond Trails
This series of easy hiking trails will keep you busy for 2-4 hours. They loop around Grout Pond and access the north end of Somerset Reservoir. There are 10 miles of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing as well as summer use. Picnicking, camping, swimming and canoeing are also enjoyed here.
Stratton Mountain Trail
This section of the Appalachian Trail (or Long Trail) is a moderate to difficult 3.3 miles to the summit of Stratton Mountain where you can climb a fire tower for miles-long panoramic vistas. The trailhead is .7 miles past the Grout Pond Access Road and well marked, with parking near the Deerfield River Bridge. Campers enjoy a 6.5 hours round trip (rated difficult) by continuing on this trail and returning via the Stratton Pond Trail.
Stratton Pond Trail
This moderate, full day hike begins on the Stratton-Arlington Road, 1.8 miles past the Grout Pond Access Road. Use the Green Mountain National Forest parking lot FR71. Cross the road and hike North for 3.9 miles to the Southeast corner of Stratton Pond. At 6 hours for the round trip, you’ll want to take a dip in the pond before heading back.
Haystack Mountain Trail
This moderate to difficult trail is 3 hours, round trip, and offers scenic views of New Hampshire, Southern Vermont and Massachusetts. Follow Rt. 9 west, turn onto Haystack Road and go 1.3 miles. Turn left onto Chimney Hill Road, then take the first right onto Binney Brook Road (bear left) to stop sign. Turn right on Upper Dam to trail head marked with a US Forest Service sign. Turn left at cross trail in .5 miles. After 1 mile, turn right at sign, steeply up to summit for .4 miles.
Molly Stark State Park
This is an easy 1.7-mile walk to the summit (3 hours round trip) of Mt. Olga where you will find a lookout tower. The elevation is 2,415 feet. Look for the Molly Stark State Park sign on Route 9, about 3 miles East of Wilmington. For info: 802-464-5460.
Somerset Reservoir
This 9.6-mile hike is longer than it is difficult, with a vertical rise of just 460 feet. Turn right onto Somerset Road, about 5.3 miles west of Wilmington Village on Rt. 9. Find a parking area and the East Branch Trail head in 2 miles. A right turn on the road intersecting the trail at 4.7 miles takes you Somerset Reservoir (200 yards).
The Valley Trail
This is a 7 to 10-foot wide, 11-mile recreational pathway through the towns of Dover and Wilmington that will eventually connect Mount Snow Resort to the Village of Wilmington. Hikers and bikers use the section from Mount Snow to the Wilmington town line. Hikers use the trail in Wilmington. Look for Valley Trail signs where the trail crosses the road, just south of Mount Snow on Handle Road. (this trail is not complete)
Woodford State Park
Located approximately 12 miles west of Wilmington on Rt. 9, day hikers enjoy several trails. One of the most popular is a 2.7-mile trail that loops around the lake. 802-447-7169.
Shore Of Lake Whitingham
This beautiful, pristine shoreline features an old railroad bed along its western shore. You can reach this trail from either end of the 12-mile-long lake. The north access is at “Medburyville.” Go 2 1/2 miles west of the center of Wilmington and take a left across the bridge. Go left again and follow to the end. The trail begins at the gate. The south entrance to the trail begins at the dam. Take Rt. 100 south from Wilmington through Jacksonville to Whitingham Village. Turn right onto Dam road 1 mile after the Whitingham Country Store. At the end of this road find parking, and walk across the dam to a right turn for an easy 12 miles (one-way).
Hogback Mountain Overlook
Once upon a time there was a ski area here, and you can hike up the old ski area access road for truly spectacular panoramic views and reach the Mt. Olga fire tower via this easy to moderate route. Another easy hike takes you on an old logging road behind the Skyline Restaurant. Directions and free maps are available at the Southern Vermont Natural History Museum or Hogback Mountain Gift Shop.

The Bennington Museum was founded as the Bennington Historical Association in 1875 to celebrate Bennington’s Colonial past and, more specifically, to commemorate the historic Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington in 1777. The Bennington Museum’s collection features the work of Anna Mary Robertson Moses (1860 – 1961), who became known to the world as “Grandma Moses”, one of America’s most noted folk artists. The museum holds the largest public collection of Moses’ paintings in the country, as well as “Yarn paintings”, art supplies, and the 18th century tilt-top table Moses painted with rustic scenes and used as her easel. The museum is also proud of its extensive array of American glass from the 19th to the early 20th century, vintage portraits of early settlers by Ammi Phillips; our unique Ralph Earl townscape; examples of abolitionist newspapers by William Lloyd Garrison; a Windsor writing-arm chair owned by Ira Allen, a founder of Vermont and author of the State’s constitution; and the world’s largest collection of Bennington pottery.
